Coimbatore: The District Collector on this World Environment Day on Wednesday kindled the nostalgic memories of the Coimbatoreans by recalling the salubrious climate of the city a decade back, and how it has drastically declined over the years.

District Collector K. Rajamani and Corporation Commissioner, J. Sravan Kumar were part of the World environment day celebrations organised at Vellalore dump yard.
CCMC along with NGO Siruthuli will plant 1000 saplings on this day along the 645 acre dump yard.
Flagging off the initiative, District Collector K. Rajamani said "I remember the City of Coimbatore used to be like a Ooty in the plains. Over the years, the city has lost the salubrious climate. Owing to environmental degradation and loss of tree cover, the humidity levels have spiked up in Coimbatore."
He added that "Though there are several reasons that has attributed to the change in climate, the consolidated efforts of the citizens can restore the climate and the glory of Coimbatore."
The Collector opined that "At least 100 acres of Vellalore dump yard should transform into a green zone. The green zone will be a place for students and the citizens to spend time and acquire knowledge about environment."
Lauding the NGOs for their tireless efforts towards environment conservation, the Collector appreciated the participation of youngsters in reviving the natural resources.
Addressing the gathering, CCMC Commissioner J. Sravan Kumar urged the citizens of the city to take small steps towards making the city greener.
He threw light on 'Waste Management' one of the challenging issues faced by CCMC. "Segregation of wastes should begin from households. Effective segregation will make waste disposal much easier. Joint efforts and co-operation of residents is paramount to transform the city into a cleaner and greener city", pointed the CCMC Commissioner.
Sujini Balu of Siruthuli thanked CCMC and the District adminstration for the efforts taken by them towards environmental conservation.
“ Siruthuli will continue to contribute towards creating a greener Kovai. We welcome such collaborations with government departments to conserve the natural resources. Today's initiative of planting 1000 saplings is just a small step towards transforming Vellalore dump yard into a green zone”, she noted..
Members from Rapid Action force, NGO Siruthuli, Namma Kovai (WhatsApp group) Bosch , ZF Company, Godrej, Bapla Association, SBM Ambassadors and students from Sri Krishna College, KCT College, Rathinam College took part in the event.
